Abraham Lincoln
Politician

Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States of America. He is most famous for ending slavery in the United States with the Emancipation Proclamation and preserving the Union through the Civil War. He is also known for chopping down his father’s cherry tree and being honest enough to admit it. Lincoln was an inspirational and powerful speaker; his Gettysburg Address rededicated the nation to freedom and democracy and remains a core component of the American value system. Most historians consider Lincoln one of the greatest Presidents in American history.i

Yes, but I still think it was Washington who cut down the tree. And Abe wasn't honest. He was a politician, and a good one because of his dishonesty. When on the campaign trail, he'd tell one town how horrible slavery was, and in the next he'd say it's great, and he'd never oppose it. He told friends in confidence that he didn't give a damn either way, so long as the Union was preserved. He exemplifies the model politician - tell everyone what they want to hear, then do whatever the hell you want. Or, as Stephen King wrote it, "first comes smiles, then comes lies, then comes lead." That's the standard practice for any wise politician, whether of moral intent, or otherwise.

Telling people what they want to hear is something that has to be done for more than just politicians... I have to do that at work all the time too... if I told people what I really thought, I don't think many people would like me. On a side note, I am hoping to eventually get all US presidents on this list and then I can do a "Most Evil US President" type of list. It would be super neato.uild

Kris there's a difference between saying "yes sir, I'm very happy for the 10c raise", and "yes I think slavery is great" Not that I don't admire him for being wily, and eventually making things better in our country. Slavery was one of those nasty problems like Saddam in Iraq - there just wasn't any clean solution so we had to have a messy one."0"<

I get your point, but I don't think your Iraq analogy is right (because I don't think it was such a problem nor did it need to be "fixed" but that's a whole different can of worms)... Abe was there when something needed to be done and he did it. It's impossible to say what a different president in that same situation would have done, but it's certainly possible that there might not be 50 states today if not for the steps Abe tooko

I agree we shouldn't have invaded Iraq, and yes Lincoln did take important steps. The whole south was crazy for splitting anyway - they split just because he won the election, not anything he said he'd do. They were just having a tantrum over political power. The thing with Saddam was it was a FUBAR situation that couldn't last, and he was gettin old anyway. Something nasty was gonna happen in Iraq no matter what we did. We just hurried it up and made sure the worst possible scenario happened.uil

Lincoln was a tyrant, plain and simple. He raised an army to invade his own country. He invaded soveriegn States which had every legal and Constitutional right to secede. No where in the US Constitution is secession of a State forbidden. Lincoln also suspended Habeus Corpus and he jailed people who spoke out against him and the war, amongst other things. Lincoln did nothing to avert the crisis of States leaving the Union, all he did was deepen it. His initial hasty calling up for an army of 75,000 troops all but assured the start of a bloody shooting war. And frankly, Lincoln did not care about slavery one way or the other, it was all about keeping power consolidated.h=

"When on the campaign trail, he'd tell one town how horrible slavery was, and in the next he'd say it's great, and he'd never oppose it. He told friends in confidence that he didn't give a damn either way, so long as the Union was preserved."

Nonsense. When he was addressing an anti-slavery crowd he would stress how bad and corrupting slavery was, and how it should never be expanded. When he was addressing a pro-slavery crowd he stressed that he did not propose that slavery should be abolished where it existed. To everyone, he said that his foremost purpose was to preserve the Union. He never concealed the fact, which was universally known, that he found slavery repugnant. One of his better lines was, "Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally."tp:

Abraham Lincoln did temporarily establish a not guite totalitarian gov't, reminiscent of the semifascism during WW I under Wilson. However, unlike Wilson, who used the war as an excuse and a popular motivator, Lincoln was effectively forced into that position by the seceding states. If he had not, it is entirely possible that other states, such as Maryland, would also have seceded, leaving the capital of the Union in the middle of Confederate territory.
Furthermore, on the issue of slaves, Lincoln was not an abolitionist. Neither was he a supporter of the institution. In other words, he was against its growth and spread to other states. He also did not think that it should be federally restricted in states where it already existed. Since slavery is inherently parasitic, when denied opportunity for growth it would wither and die, allowing the states to make the transition with relative ease. The Southern/Slave states, not content with having slavery but determined to encourage its expansion, seceded from the Union under the cover of "State's rights," when the "state's right" that they wanted to protect most, and even force on others, was that of slavery.
Ironically, by seceding in a fight that was supposedly for state's rights, the South forced an expansion of government power not seen again until FDR's administration and a significant reduction of state's rights.
Lincoln may not have done everything perfectly, but by an large he did as best he could in an excruciatingly painful and difficult situationgo.p

Though unplaned and inadvertent, The roles and values of Democrats and Republicans flip-flopped shortly after the turn of the century.

It was George Washington who, as all good politicians do, admitted to chopping down the tree only after he was caught. Lincoln does have the distinction of being known as Honest Abe, but the cherry tree scandal will forever be linked to George Washington.uil

Abraham Lincoln was without doubt the most evil man to ever serve as President of the United States. He was a bigot and a dictator who flagrantly usurped his authority, trampled the Constitution. He was was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans, black and white, slave and free.

Many politically incorrect books tell the true story of Lincoln. Here's just of them: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Lincoln-Abraham-Agenda-Unnecessary/dp/0761536418?si

Lincoln was the father of the all powerful, big daddy central federal government that we have today. I piss on his tomb for this. He destroyed the republic of soverign states that the founding fathers wanted us to have. Unhappy and disgusted with the country's politcal structure we have today? Lincoln is to blame for much of it. Funny how we are taught in school how great Lincoln, Wilson and Roosevelt were, when in fact, they are responsible for destroying the republic and the lessing of our liberty.n

Freed the slaves? Funny, I think he enslaved us all to the northern industrialists. Hero? Maybe for the power-hungry egotists. God forbid I think differently from what was "taught" to me during 12 years of forced "education". Unfortunately losers never get to tell their side because they are either killed or bred off. Let me say this, if the good guys won in 1865, 1914 and 1945, don't u think the world would be a better place? Oh, it is? Okay, go drink out of your local creek. Burn some plastic and breathe in those fumes deeply. Live and die in your ignorance to the truth, but you chose that path a long time ago when you closed your mind to the unanswered inconsistencies and started pretending like all the other fake hypocrites. I've read books about Lincoln. The thing that struck me was that most people during his term thought he was only average, and nothing to write home about. Early in 1864 it was widely believed, even by Lincoln, that he could not be reelected. His advisor told him, "Your reelection is an impossibility." He tried to find a way to "win the war" even if he is defeated in the election.

It was only after his murder that all this "Lincoln is god" stuff happened. Before that, nobody thought he was really that good.

One can wonder his reasons for abolishing slavery, considering that later he did not help black people to be integrated in society. They were persecuted by whites wherever they went, and Lincoln did not do much about it.
He was also the instigator of one of the most destructive war in the history of the world. He ravaged the South and was responsible for the death of thousands.s
