Manfred von Richthofen
The Red Baron

Manfred von Richthofen was a German fighter pilot known as "The Red Baron". He was the most successful flying ace of World War I, being officially credited with 80 confirmed air combat victories though that total may be as high as 100, and enjoying a hero status in Germany. Richthofen was an expert marksman that rarely engaged in risky tactics that often got others killed (ironically he was engaging in such behavior when he himself was killed). He was also a fine combat tactician and squadron leader. It is also significant that while Richthofen's early victories and the establishment of his reputation coincided with a period of German air superiority, the majority of his successes were achieved against a numerically superior enemy, who were flying fighter aircraft that were on the whole better than his own.nem
