Pol Pot, real name Saloth Sar, was the ruler of the Khmer Rouge and Prime Minister of Cambodia from 1976 until 1979. During this time, his government was the cause of up to three million Cambodian deaths in a process meant to purify the Cambodian people as a step toward a communist future. Targeted were Buddhist monks, Western-educated intellectuals, educated people in general, people who had contact with Western countries, people who appeared to be intelligent (for example, individuals with glasses), the crippled and lame, and ethnic minorities. In 1979 Pol Pot led Cambodia into a war with Vietnam that ultimately lead to the collapse of his government."0"<
