Pocahontas Native American Princess
![]()
Pocahontas was a Native American woman who married an Englishman, John Rolfe, and became a celebrity in London in the last year of her life. The records of the Jamestown settlers indicate that Pocahontas had a friendship of some kind with Captain John Smith, and may have saved him from death more than once. The exact nature of their relationship is open to debate due to the sparse historical records and the lack of Pocahontas's own voice though that hasn’t stopped the relationship from being romanticized in subsequent fictionalized retellings. Pocahontas was a daughter of the chief of an area encompassing almost all of the neighboring tribes in the Tidewater region of Virginia. 'Pocahontas' was a childhood nickname referring to her frolicsome nature. Because she never learned to write, everything now known about her was transmitted to later generations by others, so that the thoughts, feelings, and motives of the historical Pocahontas remain largely unknown."0" styl
